Budhanilkantha Temple is a holy place for all the Hinduism. The temple is dedicated to the Lord Vishnu, the protector, and preserver whenever the world is threatened with evil destructive force by taking various avatars. In this temple, you’ll be able to see a statue of Lord Vishnu positioned in the middle of recessed pool water and the statue made up of a single block of black basalt. The statue is also considered as the largest stone craving in Nepal. In Hinduism myth, Lord Vishnu has dark and pale blue complexion. He has four arms, holding Sudarshana Chakra (discus) in upper right hand, Panchajanya Shanka (conch) in the upper left arm, Kaumodaki Gada (mace) in lower right hand, and Padma (lotus flower) in lower left hand.
Don’t be confused, the term Budhanilkantha did not come from the Lord Buddha instead in Hinduism it stands for ‘Old Blue Throat’. People often get confused thinking that Budhanilkantha is derived from Lord Buddha. Budhanilkantha temple is a sacred place for both Hindu and Buddhist religion. We can also see the impression of Lord Buddha carved on the statue of Lord Vishnu which is covered by a silver crown. The statue of Lord Vishnu stands 5 meters tall whereas the pool is 13 meter.
Budhanilkantha Temple is situated at the northern end of the Kathmandu valley, just below the Shivapuri hill area. This temple is visited by many of the devotees on the 11th of Kartik, a festival celebrated as Haribondhi Ekadashi mela to wake the Lord Vishnu from his long sleep. Although Hindu people are allowed to go to the pool to touch the feet of Lord Vishnu, Foreigners aren’t. If you are planning to go the Budhanilkantha temple, then it might be one of your wise decisions. The place is just 10 km away and after the visit, you can also enjoy the Shivapuri hiking just above it.

Nilakatha near Buddhist shrine
Budhanilkantha Temple, located in Budhanilkantha, Nepal, is a Hindu open air temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Budhanilkantha Temple is situated below the Shivapuri Hill at the northern end of the Kathmandu valley. The statue stands 5 meters tall (around 16.4 feet) and is positioned in the middle of a recessed pool of water, which is 13 meters (42.65 feet) long. It depicts the deity reclining on the coils of the cosmic serpent Shesha.
The strange thing I observed is that if we lean on the ground and look at the idol the idols nose is visible in water.
I saw some Buddhist bhikkus are chanting mantra at outer area of the temple.
A must watch place. Lord Narayan in a sleeping posture. You are not allowed to take photograph but you can take from outside the complex. Considered to be sacred place and please go byrules.
