Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave is the most famous and longest (2950m) cave of Nepal located close to Davis Falls, Pokhara. The cave was discoveredin 16th century by some local men who were clearing grass. Within the dark cave, they discovered many shrines and statues dedicated to Hindu deities including Mahadev, Parvati, Nageshwor and Saraswati. On study about the cave, it is found that a waterfall ran through the cave and in further study, it is revealed that waterfall come from Patale Changa (later known as Davis Falls). The cave is considered to be 600 years old.
Inside the cave, the long flights of stairs wind down to the temple of Lord Shiva where the lord balanced on raised platform fenced by iron bars can be seen. The cave is dark and musty but a string of electric light bulbs emits enough light for finding the way easily. One should bend down most of the time due to narrowness of the tunnel and after passing the tunnel, there is huge open large chamber with enormous rocks with little pebbles scattered everywhere. After a few yards of scrambling through the darkness, there is a crystal clear pond and from here one can see the awe-inspiring Patale Chango (Devi’s falls) falling right from the top.
There are other attractive sites beside cave near to it, International Mountain Museum, which is about 3 km from the cave which preserve, documents and different stories of mountaineering around the world and Himalayas. Another site is Pokhara Regional Museum which is just 5 km from the cave and the place is about different communities and particular practices in the region. Beside them, Garden Dhargay Ling Monastery, Bindhya Basini Temple, Fewa Lake and many more sites which are really awesome place to explore.
