Gosaikunda ( Gosaikunda Trek ) is a freshwater lake located in Langtang National Park at the altitude of 4,380m in Rasuwa district of Nepal. The site is designated as Ramsar Site in 2007. According to Hindu mythology, this area has religious significance as the place used to be the home of Lord Shiva and Gauri. The Hindus holy books including Bhagvata Purana, Vishnu Purana, Ramayana and Mahabharata are directly related to the origin of Gosaikunda which also refers to Samundra manthan. The water of this holy place is also considered as holy and has its religious significance and thousands of pilgrims visit this area from Nepal and India during the festivals like Gangadashahara and Janai Purnima.
The main spring of this Lake is from Trisuli River and this lake is also the side of several lakes that lies in the north side from Kathmandu between Helambu and Langtang valley. It is believed that Gosaikunda have been created by Lord Shiva when he shoves his Trisul into the mountain to extract water so that he could cool his throat after he had swallowed poison.
It is also significant and gorgeous place for trekking too. Generally there are two paths which start from Dhunche Village in the Langtang Himal and Sundarijal in the Kathmandu. Starting from Dhunche, long steady climb involves reaching Chandan Bari at the altitude of 3,200m and Laurebinayak at the altitude of 3,700m from where Gosaikunda can be climbed. Staying at Laurebinayak provides beautiful sunrise and sunset views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himal.
The descent from Gosainkunda to Sundarijal which takes about 4 day, allows you to explore more experience of trekking. The trekking path involves a short climb to Laurebina La at 4,610m. There are also options to stay at Thadipati, Kutumsang, Mangengoth, and many more village dowards depending upon your quickness in walking.
