Ligligkot Gorkha Nepal

Liglig kot (लिगलिग कोट) (also known as liglig earlier) is the best hiking destination in Gorkha district located in the top of the hill in Palungtar municipality of western part of Nepal. The place is situated at the altitude of 1,437 meters above sea level offering gorgeous views of natural sceneries and beauties along with magnificient views of Himalayas. The name of the place ‘Ligligkot’ is believed to be derived from ‘lingling’ which is a Magar word meaning that a clear and beautiful view. Ligligkot is considered to be best hiking destination in Gorkha to experience and explore the traditions as well as beauty of Gorkha.

In earlier time, there used to be the tradition of choosing the king for one year through the race from Chepeghat to Ligligkot top. According to the tradition, anyone completing the race first used to be the king for the next one year. In 1559, brother of the king of Lamjung, Drabya Shah, won that race and become king of that place and as the time passed by this incident lead to the foundation of the Shah dynasty in Gorkha. The place is historically important and for the preservation of the local youths established a campaign “Ligligkot Development Expedition” and this campaign helped to restart the historical Lig Lig marathon. The marathon race was started in late 2010 for promoting and continuing the culture and is open for everyone and divided into the category as Male, Female and local for the race. Everyone can take part in this Marathon and race viewing the beautiful sites of Liglig area along with gorgeous mountain range from Mt. Manaslu to Dhawalagiri Himalayan range.

However, a hike to the Ligligkot on the top of the hill offers the visitors with the remains of the ancient palace at the top. Trekking can also started from Gorkha for experiencing historical place of Nepal.
