Lower Dolpo is the remote trekking destination in the western part of Nepal where one can make their journey following the hidden trail, which used to be used by local people over there in Phoksundo National Park. This region is mostly inhabited by Bon Po and Buddhists community, which also provide you the opportunity to explore their culture, traditions, and beliefs. Trekking in Lower Dolpo region is considered as one of the most challenging and exciting journey allowing trekkers to experience the real adventure of making a trip to the much-unfrequented path with steep sloppy hills. This trek was opened for foreigners in late 1982 and hence become success to make one of the popular trekking destinations in Nepal. This area is also referred as ‘hidden treasure of Nepal’ and consists of three high passes as Kangmara La (5,115 meters), Numa La (5,159 meters) and Baga La (5,190 meters).
Lower Dolpo trek allows you to explore the remote side of Nepal through the most challenging and exciting path consisting of three high passes that need to be crossed and hence offering mountaineering like experiences. This trek is started from Juphal, which can be reached from a flight from Nepalgunj. From Juphal, the trail follows the way through Dunai (2,150 meters), Tarakot (2,540 meters), Laina Odar (3,375 meters), Nawarpani, Toltol, Dho Tarap (3,950 meters), Numa La Base Camp (4,350 meters), Danighar (4,510 meters) via Numa La Pass, Temche (4,000 meters) via Baga La pass, Yak Kharka, Phoksundo (3,600 meters), Chhepka and finally to Juphal, the starting point of this trek. You will be trekking through semi-desert region fully composed of forests consisting of Pine, Rhododendrons, Bamboo and Juniper trees. The trail is also composed of beautiful and huge meadows gorgeous brown landscapes and colorful fields. As Shey Phoksundo National Park lies in this trekking trail, you can also observe the endangered wild animals like snow leopard, Himalayan Musk Deer, Blue Sheep and many more. You can also visit the ancient monasteries and few Bon Po shrines surrounding the Phoksundo Lake. As trekkers need to pass through high passes, all the passes offer magnificent views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and the Tibetan range, namely Kugung La and Khyung La.
Nevertheless, trek to Lower Dolpo is considered as one of the wild adventurous journeys to make with lots of offerings and opportunity to see the treasure trove area with undisturbed beauty. However, you can also see the caravans of yaks and sheep heading towards their destination during summer.
