Devdaha is the ancient capital of Koliya Kingdom and now a municipality and the place is identified as the maternal home of Queen Mahadevi, Princess Yosodhara, and Prajapati Gautami, located 7 kilometers from Lumbini to the east. Talking about the origin of the name of the place, ‘Deva’ means god and ‘daha’ means pond and collectively means ‘pond of a god’ and the place, according to believe, used to be the bathing place of gods, goddesses, and saints. According to the belief, Lord Buddha have bathed in this holy pond during his visit here in Devdaha and stayed in this place during his tours and delivers a sermon to the monks on various topics.
Beside historical significance of the place, beautiful Devdaha Park is another major attraction of the place which is eastern (front) gate of Devdaha. The park features a big statue of Lord Buddha which is about 2.1 meters tall and a gilded statue of Sariputra (one among two disciples of Gautam Buddha) and fully composed of a huge garden and a pagoda. This park is considered as the entrance as well as peace of Devdaha and the park, inside, contains various flowers. The park was established by Devdaha Conservation Academy, which was initiated by Paras Bir Bikram Shah Dev (Former Crown Prince of Nepal).
However, Devdaha is on the process of listing itself on the ‘World’s Heritage Site’ and widely renowned all around the world. A visit to this historically important place will be worth to visit which will help to gather enough information about Lord Buddha and his existence from this place.
