Mahendra cave is a cave located close to Seti River near Pokhara, Kaski and is a large limestone cave. This cave is a rare example of cave system in Nepal containing stalagmites and stalactites. Inside the cave, a statue of lord Shiva (Hindu’s God) can be found and with the amazing and mysterious structure of the cave, thousands of tourists are attracted here every year. It is believed that, this cave was discovered in late 1950s by young shepherds of Pokhara and got its name from former King, Mahendra Bir bikram Shah Dev. It was popularly surveyed by small team of Speleologists from UK, who documented the animals that lived in the dark zone of the cave.
The cave is formed in limestone which falls to the ground and continuously forms electrical sparks and is considered to be the most adventurous cave to be visited as its corridors are completely dark with continuous water dripping. Artificial light is provided approximately half part of cave due to darkness and the cave consists of 100m of easily accessible passages with 100m of low unstable corridors entered by way of a collapsed passage only perhaps half a meter high. Beside cave, sightseeing from here is full of greenery and grazing of horses and mules can be frequently observed here.
The surrounding of the cave is full of greeneries surrounded by hills showing true beauty of nature. Nearby is another great cave called as Bat cave with its own significance which can be visited within the distance of 10 minutes by foot (which is recommended) to explore the sceneries within the way between these two caves.
