Mt. Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world situated at the altitude of 8,485 meters above the sea level, is an isolated peak having its shape as a four-sided pyramid, situated at the border between Nepal and Tibet. Trekking in Makalu Base Camp is one of the most popular trekking destination in Nepal offering the great opportunity to explore high-altitude terrains, landscapes fully covered by snow and amazing and unique Himalayan lifestyle. The trail leading to Makalu Base Camp extents five major ecological zones where you can find lush, tropical Arun valley, rhododendron forests with fir and alpine meadows leading towards the Barun glacier. Trekking towards this region is most challenging and adventurous offering the unspoiled or untouched natural beauty, located close to the Everest trekking region.
Makalu Base Camp is situated at the altitude of 4,800 meters from sea level which is far enough as if some smaller mountain’s summit. Usually, Makalu Base Camp trek can be started from Tumlingtar from a flight from Kathmandu valley. From Tumlingtar, the trail follows the way towards Khadbari (1,025 meters), Chichila (1,800 meters), Num (1,500 meters), Seduwa (1,493 meters), Tashi Gaun (2,200 meters), Khamula Danda (3,500 meters), Mumbuk (3,400 meters), Nehe Kharka (3,750 meters), Sherson (4,600 meters), Yangri Kharka (3,645 meters), Mumbuk (3,400 meters), Kahuma Danda (3,500 meters), Nabagaun (2,500 meters) via Tashi Gaun, Num via Seduwa, Chichile, Khadbari and finally to starting point i.e. Tumlingtar (400 meters). The whole journey is full of excitement, adventurous and sometimes thrilling too. You can also explore the culture, tradition, and lifestyle of Rai, Sherpa and Bhotia people during this journey. People of these communities hold the key of preserving biological as well as cultural heritages of Makalu Barun area. The best time to make your journey towards this area is between September-November and March-May as the trails are not (or very little) covered with snow at this time.
Nevertheless, the major highlights of trekking in Makalu Base Camp include traveling in and towards the beautiful mountain with beautiful views, dense forest, lots of varieties of plants and animals with relatively poor and remote people with richest heart and cultures. One of the rare experiences you can obtain from here is lagging of modern facilities and resources and fully depending on the deed of nature.
